Robot Lord Round II

Here's another stab at the Robot Lord character design. I did a drawing somewhat like the one on the right and thought it was pretty funny, which gave me the idea that perhaps this character can extend his limbs so that he can be tall or short depending on his mood, inclination or what he needs to do.

One challenge with this idea is how do I shape his torso and hips so that it can be lean like a hero or rounded and pudgy like a toddler? I might do a CG mock up to see if it would work.

You can see I kept the cuboid head with the face circle. Not sure if his limbs should be more boxy to reflect his head shape. Perhaps I'll try that next.

But as usual, let me know what you think!

A Trip for the Eye

Do you know the experience of hearing a musician's latest album and you think to yourself, "Buddy, you gotta get a new sound or something, 'cause this is TIRED!"

Well, I've been saying to that to myself lately. I've been wanting to see something new, something different so I figured I'd try to draw some place different, to draw a little escapist place for your eye, a place to imagine oneself into, and voila! The Temple of the Monkey Cult is born.

I've done this subject matter before - the priest at the weird alter etc. I've not had the temple look like a baboon's head, nor has that baboon's head been carved into a hill top, nor have I drawn it in such a way that invites the viewer in to walk the paths with one's eye. I think the angle, the view helps one do that and the shading helps guide one around also.

I like how the baboon's eyes are suggested with the carved rock and the building at the back has a nice, warm feeling with the light beaming out of it. The prayer flags flapping on the line are nice and add some needed dynamism. This is one drawing that would really be improved with some colour, to help show how lush and verdant the place is. Perhaps a deep red paint on the buildings and bright warm pumpkin orange glow coming from the main building and from the torches down at the alter.

Robot Lord

This is not a test.

If I said "Robot Lord" to you and the only other things you know about him/her/it is that this character is mean, probably evil and they have and use a sword.  So based on that information, which design shown below do you like best, or if none appeal to you, which comes closest and what parts of any one of them do you like?

Can you suggest something more apt?  Anything you HAAAATE?!

Out of the Mouths of Babes

Sometimes a piece, be it an animated cartoon or a comic is saved by the execution, by something that happens after the writing and most of the planning is done. This is one of them.

The joke in this comic is pretty good, but I think it's really the baby that makes it funny. As you can see, I did a few versions of him. I was immediately not happy with his appearance when I drew him (see drawing 1).  He wasn't really in the same style as the other characters and he was also kind of ugly.  The subsequent trials can be seen in drawing 2.  For the final I flipped the left most drawing on # 2 horizontally and put it in place of the original. The shape of his head is nice and he's got cute big eyes. The other funny thing is that Mom and Baby were sympatico - both have similar expressions and angry dark clouds over their heads.  And then there's the droll! In my opinion, that's really the funniest part - he looks so ticked but has this ridiculous slime trail going down his gob.

Here's a close up of Mom and the gipper.

By  the way, Mr. I.G... the baby?  That's you!

Drawing Out

What happens when you don't know what to draw, see an image showing through from a previous page and use it as inspiration?  Well, maybe you draw what's inside your head or heart more than anything else.

I tried not to question or adjust or be too analytical about what I was drawing - I just went with it.  Now that I look at it, it's kind of like a remembering a dream and tracing it's tendrils back to the day before.

I was feeling that I was weird and alone.  Am I the warrior with the tentacle arm and hand?  I was thinking about my ideas and my inspirations, what I like to do and wondering what might come of those projects.  Are my inspirations the egg thing with the odd embryo inside?  I was thinking about my death and what I'll be to anybody else or the world after that.  Is that why I drew the skull? Perhaps every fantasy drawing just needs some warrior standing with his foot on a skull!

The only thing the drawing needs is a Megadeath soundtrack! And no, I don't know what Megadeath sounds like, but a name like that, well... did you know Pink Floyd was considering using the name Megadeath?  I wonder if that's true.
